Usenet.nl the target of hacker attacks

As the Usenet Provider (make sure to check our review) indicated in an official press release on Wednesday, its homepage has become the target of massive hacker attacks over the last few days. The consequence of the “large-scale DDoS attack on the company’s product website” was that Usenet.nl was unavailable for several hours on 23 and 24 June and again on 28 June.

The attacks seem to be a direct continuation of the aggressive hacker attacks which have been carried out on the services and websites of a number of well-known companies over the past weeks and months. The highest profile case seen recently has probably been the attack on Sony’s Playstation Network in April this year. The most awkward aspect of this occurrence was the fact that in addition to paralysing the whole network for a period of weeks the hackers also succeeded in stealing millions of pieces of sensitive customer information, some of which were published online.

Fortunately, this is not a problem which the operators of Usenet.nl face. Extensive security measures have also now been put in place to prevent renewed incidents caused by hackers.

No details have as yet emerged as to the persons responsible for the attack. The hope is that this attack on one of the largest Usenet providers will remain an isolated case. As always, we will keep you up to date with any developments as they happen!
